The 31st of October 2020 marked the end of the 2020 disc golf season with the British Championships.
This year Bedworth Disc Golf Club hosted the tournament and they have been working hard to make sure the course looked better than it ever has done before.
The 2020BC's hosted 72 players over the weekend. The format was to play 3 rounds, two on Saturday and one more Sunday morning, with a final 9 holes for the top 5 of each division.
Saturday and Sunday saw constant wind speeds of 14mph with gusts up to 40mph. Saturday had torrential rain throughout most of the day, with Sunday having the same heavy wind but it was MUCH lighter on the rain. Conditions weren't optimal but the whole field had to deal with the same conditions.
This was Team Ace's first outing as the extended team!! It was so so so amazing to spot fellow team members out on the course. We had 5 Ace team members competing at this years tournament, Max Humphries in MA4, Michael Sharkey in MA2, Jamie Matthews and Josh Birmingham in MPO and Adam Mackrory in MA3.
All team members had set out with their own goals in mind and with the weather conditions the tournament truly become a survival of the fittest. You really needed a strong belief in your ability and your bag to overcome the blistering wind and lack of grip in the weather conditions.
Ace Team Overview
This was Max's first British Championships and was just happy to be there. He had set a goal of equaling his course PB and to not come last in his division. And with an incredible 3rd round, he managed to reach both his goals, he succeeded in matching his course PB of a 74 (+18) and finished 9th out of 10. Booya!!
Adam's second British Championships, coming 2nd in MA4 in 2019. Adams expectations were set high and he had his eyes set to get into the final 9 and compete for a top 3 finish. There was a chance after 2 rounds for Adam to get into the final 9 but due some poorly executed upshots and putts, his 3rd round wasn't good enough to get into the top 5 but you bet he'll be back more focused next season.
Sharkey was competing for the top spot all weekend in a great battle with Ben Jeffrey (who ended up taking the win in MA2). Sharkey overcome the crazy conditions on day one, leading the entire tournament after round 1. The 54 was a 998 rated round and his highest rated round to date. In the second round of the day this would be beaten by James Luton, now 5x British MPO Champion who shot a 50 and British Disc Golf Hall of Famer Derek Robins who shot a 53. Sharkey wasn't able to safely protect his lead in the third round, where opting for safer plays unfortunately found OB Bunkers. Some tough spit-outs in the final 9 meant that he didn't manage to claw back the missing strokes he needed. Sharkey already has the off season in sights and will be working hard on his game.
This is Jamie's second MPO event and he really bought it during tough conditions, only one shot behind local and 2020 British Matchplay Champion Jon Tweed, Jamie showed everyone that he deserved to be playing in MPO. 10th was not Jamies desired outcome but it was only the difference of a few bad holes and making the Final 9. We know he'll be out practicing ready for next season to come back better than ever.
In Josh's first British Championships he was 1 stroke away from making it into the Final 9. Josh hit a few bumps in the first round and put a lot of pressure on his game by playing catch up in the first round. He found his rhythm in the 2nd and 3rd round and gave himself a chance to be in the Final 9. It's been a great year forJosh bringing home his first 4 wins and 2021 will be bigger and better!!
